WHY NO ONE IS FOLLOWING YOU ON TWITTER

January 12th, 2012

10. You Haven’t Uploaded A Photo: This is the simplest way to get people to follow you. People trust a face, not a clip art image of an egg. Upload a picture, preferably of you with a Sharpie mustache, or something else equally trendy.

9. You Don’t Have A Clever Bio: Your bio should make you stand out so avoid just listing things you like because, as it turns out, everyone likes ‘rainbows, butterflies, peanut butter, and peonies.’ I really like @RubenIsWrite’s ‘I don’t recall passing an 8th grade reading level so my tweets should be easy to comprehend’ and @ThatsBitchy’s ‘While you were busy thinking it, I said it.’

8. You Only Tweet To Celebrities: There’s nothing more painful that looking at your timeline and realizing that someone you follow exclusively tweets to and about Taylor Swift begging her to retweet them. Twitter is a fun place to follow your favorite celebrities, not stalk them.

7. You Only Tweet Song Lyrics: Every once in a while, when a song lyric happens to apply to a situation you’re tweeting about, it’s not a big deal to tack it on the end. However, when you exclusively tweet song lyrics, how do you expect people to want to connect with you? When you tweet nothing but lyrics, none of your tweets are original thoughts so why should people follow you, when they could just listen to the songs instead?

6. You’re A Hater: Twitter is not your old middle school’s hallway, so it’s no place to start a fight. Twitter is supposed to be a fun way to procrastinate on your Psych paper, not a place for your slather your profile with personal vendettas against the girl your ex cheated on you with. Play nice, and don’t instigate a fight.

5. You Make It A Point To Tweet Every Trending Topic: Trust me, not every trending topic is worth tweeting about. Case in point? The day’s token Bieber-related trending topic. Twitter is a good place to talk about what’s going on in the world, but you should balance it with tweets that describe what’s going on in your world too.

4. You Tweet Way Too Much: Over-tweeting is one of the quickest ways for someone to stop following you before they even started. Though it’s hard to say how many tweets per day are considered acceptable, it’s safe to say that not every five minutes of your day needs to be chronicled via Twitter. Granted some days you’ll have more to say than others, but a good general rule is to think before you tweet.

3. Your Tweets Make People Sad: Social media is supposed to be social, so don’t exclusively blast deeply personal issues like a series of tweets about all of the things you miss about your ex. Not to say every tweet needs to be all rainbows and sunshine, but just remember that people should want to read your tweets because they feel like they are getting closer to you, not because they feel like they need to save you.

2. Oh You Fancy, Huh? Twitter is not Facebook. Not every tweet needs a picture, a hashtag, link, and tagged friends. Keep it simple and focused on one thing at a time. If you just saw the best cat video of all time, then tweet the video link with a short description and maybe a hashtag. There’s a reason tweets are only 140 characters, so you don’t overload your followers with fluff. Keep your tweets simple, easy to understand, and easy to figure out.

1. Your Tweets Aren’t Funny: Nobody expects you to be a regular Seth Rogen or anything, but the quickest way to gain followers is to tweet things that are funny. Some of my favorite twitter profiles are comedic, like @vodkavendettas. There really aren’t very many tips on how to become funny, but the best advice I can give is to talk about stuff that’s going on in your life. Embarrassment, for example, is always funny.

For the second year in a row, a hip-hop artist is leading the pack in Grammy nominations.

Although his name was only called for one category during Wednesday’s (November 30) “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!,” Kanye West walked away with a leading seven nods, following the hip-hop trend set by last year’s leading nominee, Eminem.
